Be sure to install the latest stable X11 from Xquartz.org (2.7.9 as of May 05, 2016).
With considerable help from Nat Echols, we can now build coot automatically every night when a new revision is made available. I have three versions, built on three different computers. The 10.6 version is less current but it should run on 10.6.8 or greater. The 10.11 version is for 10.11 or later. The package installer will install everything in /Library/Coot. Unfortunately, it breaks if you move it. A wrapper shell script called 'coot' will reside in /usr/local/bin/coot when you are done.
- 10.11: Go to the Stand-alone Coot for 10.11 page for a 10.11-specific version, 64-bit.
Under development.
- 10.13: Go to the Stand-alone Coot for 10.13 page for a 10.13-specific version, 64-bit.

- I've made an Applescript 'Coot.app' that will open coot in a new terminal session for you. If you have a Finder window open, it will go to the directory displayed in the frontmost Finder window. Otherwise it will go to the Desktop.
This requires you to install the stand-alone Coot. It is merely an Applescript command to run /usr/local/bin/coot if you don't want to start coot from the command-line.

Having read some of the threads regarding Roon’s performance, I’m in a quandary. Given the following options, would you run Roon Core on the more powerful machine, or the less powerful but dedicated machine?
Option 1:
Mac mini (Mid 2011) 100% Dedicated to Roon:
- 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
- 8 GB Ram
- 2TB SSD
There won’t be a ton of extra room but my music will fit on the 2TB disk. I could add a second smaller SSD for OS X and Roon leaving the 2TB disk exclusively for music.
Option 2:
Mac Pro (Late 2013) Shared with OS X Cacheing server, Plex, Crashplan and Dropbox:
- 3.0GHz 8-core Intel Xeon E5
- 32 GB Ram
- 1TB SSD
In this case Roon would run on the internal SSD. Music together with movies etc. will be stored on a directly attached rackmount Thunderbolt RAID from Lacie. It’s unlikely Roon and Plex would be used together.
Common to both options is a Synology NAS for backup, a Synology expansion unit to backup the NAS and a decent pipe for online backups to Crashplan and Dropbox.
All the hardware is racked together with a UPS in the basement of my home. There are 3 enterprise switches between the Macs and my DAC and amplifier.
A wildcard option would be to run Roon in a Linux virtual machine using VMWare Fusion on the Mac Pro.
